Structural Surveyor + Cost Range (one wall inspection)

Hello all, I'm going to need to have some form of knowledgeable person come out to inspect a large crack that I have in my back wall as it's getting bigger and I want to ensure that whatever I do to fix it is as near a permanent solution as possible.

Am I right in thinking that I need the services of a structural surveyor? If not, who/what would I best to enlist the services of? Also, does anyone have a ballpark for the cost of inspecting one wall in the South London area?

Thanks again for any and all replies.

Structural Engineer. You want someone who is an MIStructE (member of the Institute of Structural Engineers) and a CEng (chartered engineer) with professional indemnity insurance.

There is a find an engineer link from

formatting link
but as engineers have to pay to be listed on it, it's well incomplete. Or look up Structural in Yellow Pages.

It may not be just the wall; it depends what is supporting or being supported by the wall. I guess around £ 300-500 to inspect and report; slightly more if you want Drawings which you can take to builders and ask them to quote against.

It may cost a lot more than that. I have a wall in the garden that if failing. Just a "quick" look to see if it is safe would be £300-£500. a more detailed survey to ascertain what needs to be done (this includes drilling to find exactly what the ground is like would cost around £1,000. Of course if it is an insurance job then no worries.

Or maybe less. I recently had a structural survey done on a 2-up-2-down by a C.Eng, M.I.Struct.E., with written report, for 211 GBP incl VAT. So suggest you go ask one locally for a quote!

Thanks everyone for the advice.

David: I don't suppose the person you used was in the South London / Croydon area were they? If so, any chance you could forward their contact details to me?

Much appreciated.
