HI all,Daughter picked me up a pair of 1/4 turn taps from Screwfix for ourbathroom basin yesterday and I was wondering if we bed taps down inanything these days to stop them leaking / moving or should thesupplied rubber washer be ok? I have used silicone previously but as you only get a very thin layer,it doesn't seem strong enough to hold the tap if it gets a strong pushetc?At the same time, I'm guessing you don't want to actually glue the tapinto the (ceramic) basin in case you ever need to remove it? [1]The rubber gasket works ok on twin / mixer taps because they areunlikely to rotate so just need to provide a seal?Cheers, T i m[1] A family friend had some work done in their bathroom and thatrequired replacing the taps. The 'plumber' [1] tried but they had beenset in putty that had gone a hard as concrete and he was worried hewould break the (suite matching, no longer available) basin gettingthem out.So they called me (an electronics tech?) and as the basin was alreadyoff, just put it on some dust cloths on the floor and chain-drilledthe putty out with a long / thin bit from underneath till the tapsfell out. ;-)[1] Am I right in thinking that most 'trades' either don't often havemany skills outside their own (or even within their own re gettingtaps out of a basin ) or simply don't want the trouble / bother ofanything that could be time consuming / difficult?A mate wanted some tiling done in a small bathroom and ended up doingit himself as he couldn't get anyone to take the job on at any money?

Sounds like a "Plastic? WTF?" moment to me.

A tap with a longish spout, as many have, gives great leverage on a compression nut, making said nut an invitation to some other sort of nut to push sideways on the tap loosening the nut. I therefore conclude it would be a bit nuts to rely on nuts to not loosen the compression nuts by nutting the taps.
