Stoopid question about TCT blades in sliding combi saws

Do they cut aluminium - specifically 2-3mm thick cast guttering - 4.5" standardish sort of stuff.

Be handy if they did. I do not have a tooth count (but I could go and count them) but it's a medium blade rather that the course old thing my saw came with.

If I needed to fit a special or finer blade, it would be worth it for the job.

Evolution saws claim to do this.

I have cut steel with mine, even if not intentionally. Nails and screws cut as easily as the wood.

I cut a simple tubular table leg very satisfactorily with a compound mitre saw. Fairly large number of teeth - maybe 40? Can't now remember where I read about doing this - but it was from instructions or decent advice, not suck it and see!

I think you should use some sort of lubricant - I think paraffin is usually used for cutting/machining aluminium but possibly not a good idea - maybe some wax?

No idea if cast is different.

Obvious precautions - eye protection, etc.

I have an evolution rage and I'm sure that would cut 3mm aluminium with not problem - I've cut thick steel tube without any problems. I ssupect the 'cast' aspect might be the greatest issue though. Perhaps just a matter of taking it slowly so the blade doesn't slow down?

I use an Evolution saw. Noisy and tends to spit swarf but does the job.

The blades are not the same as the relief behind the cutting edge is much smaller (sort of step) than for a conventional blade.

Oops, that sounds like I have an evolution, i don't. just a tct blade in a saw.

The cast aspect crossed my mind as well, taking it slow should be OK. Sort of surprised that ali guttering is cast I'd expect extruded or even folded on site.

As for TCT blade cutting it, yeah, the odd nail hasn't stopped the TCT tipped blades in my bench saw. I wouldn't use a new blade though or expect one to be much good for timber after cutting ali.

Seems reasonable...

It depends. Sometimes they make a hell of a mess of the metal. Sometimes the teeth are ripped off. I have seen TC blades designed forc utting steel pipe worked wonderful. You could try a careful experiment, not going at it too fast.

Or Angle Grinder.

But with what disc? Ali is very "soft and sticky" compared to stone, or steel. It'll clog an abrasive disc in next to no time.

Wow - looks mean!

Yes - take it slow and there is no problem.

Beware the swarf: it stings a lot more than woods dust. And it might be a touch more likely to contain a TCT tooth. So stay out of the way of the swarf, take it slow, and it will cut very nicely indeed.

I have used cheapo diamond disk. Doesn't seem to have the clogging problem you get with ordinary abrasive disks
