Split load relays. Voltage sensing vs regular relay

May 26, 2025 0 Replies

Hi All,

When Noah was a lad split load relays for tow-bar electrics were simple relays triggered by the accessory / ignition portion of the lock barrel…..

Nowadays voltage sensing seems to be the thing.

I can see the sense in this, because it prevents accidental discharge if you leave the key in the accessory position.

However, the one that I bought last year (rated at 140A, but only feeding a

7A ish load) keeps “cycling” i.e turning the load on and off constantly.

I assume:

Voltage rises Load is turned on Load pulls volts down Load is turned off Volts rise Load is turned on

Rinse and repeat.

There are heavy duty cables feeding the relay, but only from a 20A fuse from the car’s internal fusebox.

Might it be the case that at least some modern(ish) cars din’t get on with these relays ?
