Space above a gas hob

I've fitted a gas hob and I need to get a gas fitter in to connect it up.

I'm getting conflicting advice about space above and around the hob.

B&Q's kitchen bloke designed a kitchen for me, and pointed out that 10cm either side of the hood above the hob was required, with filler pieces between the hood and the cupboards. A very recent requirement, he told me. I didn't use the design.

The Zanussi hob instructions, and a kitchen installer friend of mine, say differently. No 10cm either side, just that the hood is at least

75cm above the hob.

At the moment there's no 10cm filler, and I'm concerned the fitter might refuse to connect the hob.

Which advice is correct? If the filler is needed, my only practical option would be to temporarily remove the wall units. 10cm gap would be too complicated, and I'd just have to fit the cabinets when the fitter's gone and break the law etc.

i have a 10cm gap and its useful as i can push the steamer up against the h ob and get the steam extracted. the design also looks less crowded. I used a wider hood so no fillers needed. i'm not actually sure what you mean by f iller pieces but if the hood is being vented along the top of the units may be this is required to hide the pipe. my hood is vented through the ceiling so this is not an issue. if you are not using a chimney type hood things m ay be different. I recall once hearing that it's to do with combustible materials and chipboard isn't counted as such.

Otherwise, though, how many kitchens have you ever seen with these gaps in place? This "requirement" has been about for many years and, in a vague way, I keep an eye out for this but I think I've seen maybe one kitchen that's been done this way.
