The expression as used in my family has always been 'There's more ways to kill a cat than choking it with lard'.

Very odd saying indeed. I'm not even sure why one might want to skin or kill a cat as in them old days they were kept to stop the rodent population from getting out of hand. Interesting program about the history of mouse traps on radio 4 the other day.
