Sill height?

Am I right in thinking that the "sill height" of a window as measured from the floor is not actually the height of the top surface of the sill but of the bottom of the visible glass?

I'm trying to calculate whether or not I'll need toughened (or safety) glass for a new window, and those couple of inches could make all the difference - though is there any significant difference in price and practicability between ordinary glass and the strengthened variety?

Incidentally, one window supplier told me that the threshold for toughed glass was 900mm - but it's 800, isn't it?

Many thanks.

I thought it was from floor height to the bottom edge of the glass.

Yes 800mm, except 1500mm if it's within 300mm of a door.

I actually used toughened in a few windows I didn't need to, so that all my ground floor are toughened.

Thanks very much. I don't quite follow the logic of the 1500mm requirement, but it doesn't apply in this case.

Maybe it's considered people are more likely to trip in the vicinity of a door, and that would be bad news of they end-up lunging towards a nearby window?

When I was young we had a glazed front door and full height side window, with normal patterned glass, until my younger brother tripped going down the stairs and went through it - head first. Luckily enough for him he just ended up with a 2" cut above his eye, but the door and window were quickly replaced with toughened glass :)

Aged around four, I opened my parents' fully glazed kitchen door, walked in, closed the door, slipped on the freshly mopped floor and found myself lying in the hall surrounded by glass. Not a single scratch! The glazing was replaced with plastic until the door itself was later replaced.

We had the same thing on my BCO patch in Worcester Park: a seven year old who went through the door, cut his throat and that was it. After that, though it wasn't then required, I always tried to get people to spend a bit extra on toughened or laminated glass.
