Rust on clothes coming from Hotpoint washing machine?

Relatives live in a hard water area and have had a Hotpoint WDD960 washing machine for just over a year.

They are now getting small yellow spots that show up on light coloured clothes that they are told are rust spots. And that they should use 'Calgon' in the washing machine.

Is this likely the fault of the machine? If so should one try to get recompense from Hotpoint?

Is there any good way to get rid of these yellow spots?

Quite seriously, get rid of the Hotpoint. Modern machines of theirs are rubbish.

Anyway, the bearings will go soon. The spots might even be due to the bearing seal failure.

Possibly, but there are also other possible causes such as work on the mains pipes dislodging debris or an iron/steel item in the washing which has fallen out and is rusting.

You could try, they have no obligation to give you even if their machine is faulty unless you bought it directly from them.

Check that the filter on the hose/machine connection is present. ie the inlet of the solenoid valve. You often get bits of crap out of the iron/steel underground pipe especially if someone has been messing with it.

Oh and make sure some rusting steel object not trapped somewhere in the machine. Eg in the drain. It's not likely to be anything to dowith the machine itself.

Told by who?

Rubbish advice.

No.

Depends what they are. What washing detergent is used? What wash programme is used?

Do they have a cat?

We had a similar experience with a brand new Zanussi. SWMBO had a habit of putting the washing into a basket and leaving it on the utility room worktop until later in the day before hanging it out to dry.

She noticed light orange spots on the washing and as it happened a couple of times in the first week, we called the engineer out. He diagnosed a rusty drum despite it being stainless steel and the supplier replaced the machine.

It happened again and we were about to call the engineer when SWMBO found our ginger tom fast asleep on top of the damp washing. Lifting him out of the basket revealed a large quantity of dark spots which turned out to be flea droppings which dissolved into the fabric leaving the stains.

Felt like putting the cat in the machine for a good wash but decided on thorough flea treatment instead.
