I need to make some new netting support frames to keep cabbage whites and root fly off my brassicas for the coming season.
Looking at a few suppliers' prices, roof battens seem up to 10% cheaper than pressure-treated softwood of exactly the same dimensions. Both are "rot/fungus resistant".
Other than colour (blue v brown) is there likely to be any difference?
My guess is "no". Aren't you comparing planed with sawn?
Lengths of blue MDPE pipe bent into hoops is the way most allotment people do it round here.
Tile battens are fine. I make trellises and other climbing frames for plants out of them.

I have netted mine in various ways:-
Hoops made from blue poly water pipe secured either through holes bored in fencing rail or spiked on short lengths of Bamboo cane.
Surplus small poly tunnel supports.
Current version is an aluminium 4' x 10' cold frame with permanent netting stapled to attached timber.
Whatever you use, you need to get under there to weed and plant successional seedlings!
If anyone is interested, I have a second 4 x 10 cold frame surplus and ample 2'x2' toughened glass for pocket money. West Herts.
