Replacing Honewell wirless thermosts with something both wireless and WiFi?

For yea these many years we have used Honeywell wireless thermostats (or copies) to control the Central Heating (CH).



This has worked fine, except in the shoulder season when you might want to heating to come on for a couple of hours in the early morning on a cold clear night.



What would be easiest would be to replace the wireless thermostat but keep the boiler controller bit. So no more complicated than replacing the thermostat unit like for like.



I am struggling with search terms as a mixture of wireless and WiFi doesn't seem to find what I want, if it exists.



Has anyone done this (or similar)?

I built my own, to be honest, because I too couldn't find what worked for me

Raspberry Pi Zero W runs linux, a webserver and 4 mains relays. The code on that does timing.

The mains relays drive the motorized switiches.

Pi Pico Ws running very simple code update temperature from up to three zones every 5 seconds or so from remote locations, via wifi to the Pi zero.

It took a lot of code to get it working but it's bloody marvellous now

Look at Resideo (ex Honeywell) Evohome ... a bit more function than you need, but I can recommend the system

These days its becoming more common for the thermostat to talk wirelessly directly to the boiler control meaning you replace both.

I have had a Salus RT510RF for many years (

). Functionally, in terms of heating control, it is very good indeed. Ergonomically, however, it has only just avoided being chucked out a window many times.

It will stand up if the tripod support at the back doesn't fall out (I've used blue tack to hold it in). And when you do pick it up, good luck on not touching one of the six buttons on the front and doing something you shouldn't. But you probably won't know which button you've pressed until something unexpected happens (or something expected doesn't)!

Once you have started off down the smart route, HomeAssistant is option. It's a FOSS backend that provides quite an impressive extensible WebUI and an app. I'm running it on a dedictated little headless PC which is running the docker image in an HAOS appliance which itself is running in a VM. (Or I least I think that is how I set it up :) ).

It lets you create any amount of scripts to deal with real life.

My Honeywell wireless thermostat has a similar problem. As delivered, picking it up meant that it would probably fall to the floor, leaving the little stand in your hand. A simple rubber band fixed that, but what a failure of design.

I assume you have a timer/ programmer?

If this is fitted using the standard MK14 back plate ( the ‘body’ clips to a plate in a back box with a row of ‘forked’ connectors, fitting a Hive system should be simple.

Hive not only had a wireless thermostat but you can programme and control the system via an APP on a phone, control via Alexa etc. You can add ‘smart’ radiator valves.

I fitted ours a number of years ago and we find it very useful.

I have a wireless thermostat (which I assume equates to a timer/ programmer), and a white box near the boiler which has the controls for the boiler.

I am looking for something which talks Honeywell to the white box (just like the current wireless thermostat) but also talks to an App.

In order to do that you would need a Wireless Thermostat that talks WiFi and generally the power required to connect to WiFi means it needs mains power, so ceases to be wireless in the general sense of the world.

Generally systems that talk to an app like Wiser or Tado have a powered hub that has the WiFi interface and uses a low power protocol like ZigBee or BlueTooth to talk to the thermostats or other sensors.

So I believe you will need to replace the white box, or connect to the boiler in some other way..

Not necessarily. My oil sensor wakes up every two hours to send a signal (including outside temp) back to the mothership via wifi. Looks like over a year on three AA cells is on I don't bother to ise that tech indoors though as there are plenty of mains sockets...
