Replacement expansion vessel placement

Put it low down & it can "air" the cupboard, a bit (like the good old days, a bit) :-)

Hi, need to replace a failed boiler expansion vessel* how critical is it to place an additional (replacement) expansion vessel close to the boiler? From what I read it seems the concensus is as close to the boiler as possible or Bad Things will happen, but I've also seen installations where a system boiler has an expansion vessel in a remote cupboard. So it can't be all that bad?

*Vaillant, so no surprise there, but it did manage to last a few years. I really don't want to demount the boiler to replace the internal one and space around the boiler is very limited, hence the question.

Doesn't really matter IMHO.

Mine is in my loft, where the old feed tank was.

I can't see why it would need to be close to the boiler.

I replaced mine and felt keeping it as close to the boiler as possible was a Good Thing. Luckily I had space in the room to mount it high, and it's been nearly 2 years now.

More important is which side to connect it to. Mine is fitted to the return side as it runs cooler so is kinder to the diaphragm.

The location of it is not really that important.

Most modernish Vaillant boilers have a very easy to get at expansion vessel - typically on the right hand side of the case. Vis (silver thing top right):

makes little difference where it is as long as it never gets cut off from the boiler primary circuit.

Our boiler is in the loft, our expansion tank in in the garage. Has worked fine for the last ten years. I would say that it?s not that critical. ;-)

Install a cutoff valve anyway, thus ensuring that the expansion vessel will never fail because now you can swap it out with ease?

I've seen plumbing jobs where it looks like someone was working with Es.

It would be nice, but there isn't enough clearance above the boiler to remove the Expansion vessel in situ - at least according to Vaillant anyway.

This one has the flat red vessel at the back, the one in the link does look easier to change.

Well that's that settled then :)

It's going in a convenient space in a storage cupboard - about 4m from the boiler. The CH pipes already run through said cupboard so should be straightforawrd...

Given the poor service life reported for two of the brands I looked at, this might not be a bad idea! :)

Oops - forgot that one ! :)

Of course now it's got the cutoff, it will never need attention again. Like the taps I fitted 15 years ago.
