replace torch filament with led

I see one may buy replacement 1W capsules for torches but they cost over a tenner plus postage.

I also note that many cheap led torches have multiple leds and 3 cells to a battery with no electronics.

However my favourite torch is a buy 24AA cells get torch free from Kodak. It takes 2 AA cells, has a very bright single 1W led and some electronics. I have bust it and just wonder what those electronics do as I have some bright leds to play with. Do they do a step up voltage and then current limit the supply to the led?

The electronics probebly strobes the LEDs with short high current pulses, that produces a subjectivly more intense light output than would have be obtained with DC.

...and should be avoided. The cheap ones don't drive the LEDs correctly nor focus the multiple sources into a proper beam.
