I have to repair a tear (approximately 5" long, with clean edges) in an elderly black leather chair. Has anyone here ever used the adhesive leather (and fake leather) patching material that's fairly widely advertised?
Or the alternative backing-sheet-and-adhesive repair kits such as this?:
The BBC 'Repair shop on tour' did a refurb on Trevor Baylis' favourite leather chesterfield arm chair on tues or wedneday.
The restorer replaced panels and restuffed the cushion, then gave it a good clean and 'lubrication'.

I shall, thanks. I plan to look into cleaning and waxing (or whatever the process involves) once I have the large tear in the leather repaired.

Thanks for that, though his first instruction, "take a piece of leather which matches the covering of your chair" might be easy if you do this sort of thing for a living but is surely rather impractical for most people?

Fair enough, thanks. And this method would serve well if the edges of the split couldn't be forced back together, as is necessary with the glue-and-fill repair kit I found.
