Staithes is a seaside village in North Yorkshire. Formerly one of the many fishing centres in England, Staithes is now largely a tourist destination within the North York Moors National Park.
The village was home to a group of 20-30 artists known as the "Staithes group" or the "Northern Impressionists". The group contained renowned artists such as Edward E. Anderson, Joseph R. Bagshawe, Thomas Barrett & James W. Booth & was inspired by other impressionists such as Monet, Cézanne & Renoir. Dame Laura Knight became the most famous member of the Staithes Group; she & her husband & fellow painter Harold Knight kept a studio in the village. ============================================ I found a painting by one of the Staithes group, in 2018, at a local (North Carolina) refuse receptacle: Fred Mayor, English Impressionist, c1910, watercolor "Small Dutch Sailing Boards"
In 1745, when he was 16, Cook moved 20 miles to the fishing village of Staithes, to be apprenticed as a shop boy to grocer & haberdasher William Sanderson. Historians have speculated that this is where Cook first felt the lure of the sea while gazing out of the shop window.
