It would have died from overwatering if she really had done it every day. Once a fortnight is enough for succulents.

Fake plants have become very convincing.
It actually varies a lot with the seasons. In summer in full growth they can even stand being under water for a short while. Deserts are strange places with long periods of drought and then the odd flash flood.
Cacti and succulents have evolved cunning methods to store water when it is available. They ones in the most extreme conditions have multiple layers of corrugations and can suck up water almost until they burst.

Is an example from a fairly tricky region.
It is much easier to kill a cactus or succulent by over watering. Many can survive for a year or more without water at ambient UK temperatures. In a centrally heated home they may need some water in winter to stop the root hairs dying completely.
