I think its already started. Its very difficult to know as if we get lucky and the sun shoves its massejections in another direction as it did a couple of weeks back then you have no immediate issue.



I can say this though at the moment the propagation over short distances of low frequencies in the mornings is crap, and the noise is bad from the ionosphere. Nobody really knows the way the two processes in the sun interact to add or diminish the solar cycle. Some may suggest by a rule of what happened when things are as they are now, but I cannot say I'm impressed with accuracy. With a bit of luck it will fry Musks satellites and deorbit them. Brian


It might fry all the GPS sats too though. Southern region trains won't know if they are at a 'short' platform :-)

They use GPS to decide if the rear N coaches of a 12- coach train are next to a patform.

Mind you, people managed with the old slam door trains.

Long-distance submarine fibre-optic cables have repeaters which are powered by high-voltage dc supplies at each end. Induced voltages in the power conductors might, in principle, cause problems.

Although given the cost of a failure, you might expect pretty good protection right at the end. Would standard "lightning" protection (for induction from ground currents) work?

Induced how? From sunspots? Salt water is a conductive medium so should shield most of the length. All a bit like the hydrogen scare in the 1980s.

If it were to happen then it would be a big solar flare with a coronal mass ejection in the direction of the Earth. There are satellites watching for any such events.

1989 was the last one big enough to take down significant parts of Canada's national grid. Smaller local events don't make the news.

As a crude rule of thumb if you can see a bright aurora in the southern parts of the UK then it is getting close to being enough to cause trips somewhere in North America. Magnetic north is much closer to them.

I was interested to see speculation a little while ago that the magnetic north pole might be in Russian territory by now.
