Polizei train?

Standing on a platform in Dusseldorf main station the other day I was surprised to see a diesel locomotive unit pass through with Polizei emblazoned on it's side. Do German police have their own train engine ? Whatever for ?

That reminds me of the advert for British Rail where they showed the advantages of travelling by train rather than car, such as not having to stop for a pee and not being pulled over by the police for speeding - they showed one train, in police livery, overtaking another, with its two-tone horn sounding like a police siren.

I wonder if the German equivalent of the BTP have any locos of their own?

Maybe they have a lot of train robbers over there, so if they label them all with police train none will get robbed? Brian

But it is from Austria. And not a diesel.

Maerklin made a model of a Police train, comprising a helicopter wagon, a mobile command centre and a passenger carriage for the Police, which suggests that one does, or possibly did, exist.

I suppose I could envisage, especially in a larger country than the UK, a specialised vehicle carrying forensic resources and perhaps some accomodation or welfare facilities making sense. Or perhaps for deploying larger teams of "riot police" or the like.

Slightly scary!

A class 37 in police livery pulling over an HST.

There was also a class 47 that was painted in police livery, as part of the marking of the taking out of service of the class.

Neither are anything to do with the police.

The police do sometimes run "Q-trains" (named after Q-ships) which are normal, unmarked trains, but with no passengers. They are used on lines where vandals frequently throw things at the trains - they get a bit of a surprise when a train suddenly stops and the police pile out of it!

it's a) Austrian and b) advertising, for policemen, or perhaps that should be phrased as "for a career in law enforcement".

This is the model that Maerklin make, which looks rather different, although Austria was the main customer for the locomotive type:

Does that date from the Miners' strike? The police were moving a lot of officers around at that time.
