The jaws are self adjusting and accommodate all sizes without manual adjustment, albeit with far more force being required for the larger ferrules.

The screw locked adjustment is for tool wear compensation. If you find that the ferrules are loose enough to be easily removable after crimping then you can use that adjustment to tighten the criming action (or in reverse if they are over-crimping).

How long will 1800 ferules (many presumably too large for typical DIY use) last ?.

Is there a way of crimping them on without the special tool ?.

I think a long time...

.. oddly I paid a pound more for mine but only got 1250 ferules..

How long is a piece of string? I've had a similar kit for a few years and found that I tend to use the same size every time so one size is going to run out whereas other sizes will be unused.

Similar kits (crimping tool + range of ferrules) can be purchased from Ebay for around £16

The larger diameter plastic insulated section in some instances prevents the ferrule from being inserted fully into a connector. For these instances I've also invested in some bootlace ferrules.

The crimping tool crimps on 4 sides* so I'm not sure what you would use to get the same result. As these kits, or the crimping tool alone, is relatively cheap why not use the proper tool to get a reliable result.
