I assume it's a thermostat problem on the Parkinson Cowan 7000 gas cooker. After lighting, the flame fires up nicely but my tenants say that even turned up fully everything they cook is taking twice as long as usual, or even longer. Could it be anything else? If the thermostat, is it straightforward to replace? Would there be a 'generic' stat available? It's an old model and maybe better to replace, but don't mind tackling a reasonably easy job, as a competent diy-er.

Is the cooker fitted level ? is the cooker oven internal roof fitted the right way round? is the door seal ok?

Joe, The cooker was working fine, and hasn't been moved, so yes it's level. I doubt that the internal roof has been removed and put back in the wrong way round. But I'll check the seal. The first two points are AFAIK - but I'll check. And if all the points you raised check out 'OK' I guess we are then left with the thermostat. Thanks for pointing out those possibilities. Hugh

Although it may be a simple diy job if the appliance is in a rented property are you sure it's a good idea playing with it? I can't see the insurance company being happy if you inadvertantly blow the back of the house apart.
point taken , but I do all my own gas central heating installations, and full re-wiring, and get all the work certificated - so it's 'up to scratch' - also do boiler repairs, so I feel competent to tackle such a job, but I'm not foolish enough to attempt it without prior knowledge, advice and guidance, - hence my posting the question here.

I'm sure you may be quite competent but by the time you've repaired it yourself, then payed someone to certify you may find it cheaper\as cheap to get someone in to replace the thermocouple and test his own work while he's there.
You are of course aware of the implications of the Gas Safety Installation and Use Regulations and the need for work done commercially to be carried out by a class of approved persons (currently Corgi reg.) together with the requirement for all gas appliances in rented property to be annually certified safe and a coppy of the certificate handed to the tenant? I'd strongly suggest anyone having to ask your questions should stay away from such a job.
