OTish: interesting job

Been working at the old Buckmore Park scout place.

Apparently it was built with the help of a Lottery grant. It was opened in 2001 and closed to the public in 2003. It cost £15 million to build. Facilities included an indoor pool, sports hall, indoor shooting range, climbing wall and cave system. Also had villas to accommodate visitors.

Now been bought by a happy clappy church Kingsway International Christian Centre

They are turning to old swimming pool area into a 2,000 capacity church. Seem to have plenty of cash to do the job. Boss man arrived in a Hummer H2 - 59 plate - about £50K's worth.

Team of 5 blokes putting a beam & block floor over the old pool, loads of other guys working - I was probably the only bloke wearing both safety boots & hi-viz, most had neither. HSE inspector would have had a conniption fit.

Total disarray. In the 4 hours I was there, 7 lorries turned up to deliver stuff they had nowhere to put. Approx 500 plastic chairs left outside, people waiting around for parts. They reckon they will be having their first church service at the end of the month...

I think it's unwise and unprofessional to identify a customer and pass comments like yours in a public forum.

I'm sorry to have to second that.

I'm more concerned about £15m of lottery money going up the spout.

Buckmore Park had been a Scout place a lot longer than that. I have memories of going swimming / camping there in the 1970s.

I'm surprised the original folk could not make a go of it, I suspect ineptitude on marketing. Brian

Obviously the original owners did not market it very well, sounds like a great resource, not ehey lost the pool and the joint is going to be fullof clueless evangelists. Brian

Well, not that sure its not public knowledge already, I'm sure I remember hearing something on Radio Kent about it a while back. I listen sometimes on the Internet. Brian

If it's not true they are free to sue for libel.

Read what TMH wrote and the BBC link, £2m of lottery money.

Curious that it is 10 years since it closed to the public, clause in the T&Cs of the lottery grant? What has been happening to the place since

2005 ish when the scouts/schools appear to have stopped using it.

It was a go-kart place for several years.

So you're saying it's OK to discuss your customers' private business in public, and make adverse comments? What about professional integrity?

Organisation I have connections with had £3.4 million from the Millennium Commission which, despite being wound up, wants its money back if the undertaking is sold within 30 years.

And imagine the outrage if it was turned into a mosque?

What private business? What adverse comments?

You made some comments on the chaotic way the site is run, eg chairs left in the rain, H&S. You might say that's hardly private, but I'd still worry that if you came and worked in my house you might post something about what you found.

You think it's OK to drop your employer in the shit re H & S just for the sake of some amusement on a newsgroup?

You think it's OK to drop the site manager in the shit re lack of organisational skills just for the sake of some amusement on a newsgroup?

These comments are fine as long as you don't let on who you're talking about. When you're invited onto a job there's a trust relationship. You've broken it.

I wouldn't want you working in my house house if I thought you were going to tell all and sundry about what goes on here.

And did the lottery give you 2m to pay for your house?
