OT Whinge

I still have mine. It has been around the world with me. I had it CLA'd ? in 1994 at Park Cameras, Burgess Hill but I haven't used it for so long the shutter is now sticky.

Pentax LX bought in LCE Guildford in 2008 for peanuts (*) is still working fine.

(*) LX has off-the-film metering, so without a film loaded it seems to have incorrect shutter settings. Something that LCE staff were unaware of. It actually worked perfectly.

I need a phone that has a camera that can take pictures of pages of magazines or papers and automatically flatten out the picture correctly. You know, the bit need the centre fold bulges up and gives a distorted image. My MotoG31 also takes a while to decide if it is in focus when taking these photos.

Hmm. I used CT18 in the 80's. I must take a look and see how they are.

It could be that the box or folders used to store the slides has caused the problem.

I think some plastics give off chemicals as they age. Polypropylene slide holders for hanging in filing cabinets are a problem, I believe.

My Nikon Coolscan 9000ED has a radio button that just fixes all the colour errors in old slides with one click.

I had a Minolta X700 SLR for many years, and was very pleased with it. I've never bothered with a DSLR.

In 2003 I bought my first digital compact camera - an HP 4530. It was only 2MP, and I had to screw on a lens for semi-macro close-ups! It was replaced in 2007 by a Ricoh Caplio compact. It was amazingly good; 7MP, a 35mm equivalent of 28 - 200 zoom lens, and macro down to 1cm (strangely the manual says 10cm, but I used it for years down to 1cm). The zoom mechanism failed in 2017, so I replaced it with a Canon Powershot 620 - 20MP, 25 - 625mm zoom equivalent, and 1cm macro. It will also shoot video at 1920 x 1080 (the Caplio was limited to 640 x 480). I still use it occasionally as the optical zoom is remarkably good.

What I do miss with compacts is the ability to control depth-of-field, as it is not possible to get the background well out-of-focus. The other thing is that I had a very powerful auto-exposure flashgun I could use off-camera with an extension lead with the X700. It was powerful enough to illuminate a scene 50 metres away (f1.8 50mm lens at ISO 100) or could be used in macro mode 1 cm from the subject without fear of overexposure. That is one hell of a working range, and I still miss it.
