In fact classical music is alive and well and still being composed. It makes no money, but many composers can turn out marvellous film scores. Carl Davis for one.

John williams for another

...Hans Zimmer..

And even Vaughan Williams did the soundtrack for the 49th parallel

1936 sees Barbers 'adagio for strings' - a superb piece of artwork by any standards.

And Andrew Lloyd Webber - father to the later ones - was composing in that style through to the 1970s

Even the younger lloyd webbers are arguably classical composers and musicians

1978 is the ghastly 'spiegel im spiegel' that drones on and on, like Joni Mitchell, but has to be 'classical'

My nephew is a professional composer: his money comes from film and advertising work, but he does occasionally compose for his own amusement. He will use whatever eclectic mix of instruments suits the mood.

He could care less whether its 'classical' '60s blues' - 'millennial mood music on synth' - he studied them all and can recreate them all.

The BBC subsidise The Proms. Meaning the broadcasts, available to all, should be more important than for the few who actually go to see it live.

Oh - I find it nice to have some new material too. Stick to Classic FM if you want the classical top twenty all the time.

The programme included pieces described as novelties, which are not defined, but are obviously not things concert-goes might normally expect, as well as works by new composers and unperformed works. That seems quite in keeping with what the Beeb are doing today and have been doing since 1927, for many years after still with Sir Henry Wood as conductor.

It's one of the few things worth celbrating in this country.

It's abolition of the family in its current form - not least in the role it keeps in maintaining a patriarchal society, skewing distributuion of wealth, and messing up kids. Family is predicted to stay post-socialism. The processes of socialism will determine what it ends up being.

I think you'll find that Classic FM has spread its wings somewhat over the years. Yes, it still plays a lot of popular classical music, but it has also introduced "new" composers and their music. A lot of Karl Jenkins' music was premiered on Classic FM. It has also played a fair amount of modern South American music, such as "Libertango" by Astor Piazzolla and "Conga del Fuego" by Arturo Márquez. Perhaps all of these have been played on Radio 3 before Classic FM started playing them, but, if so, it was probably in a graveyard shift.

An Americanism, m'lud.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is NOT what it states in the Communist Manifesto!

Socialism will determine WHAT?? Your suggestion sounds utterly horrific to anyone but a fully-committed, dyed-in-the-wool Cultural Marxist. You people are weird and scary.

That's music /in the style/ of classical music, not really original work.

Actually, I think Sir Karl Jenkins has made a lot of money from performances of his music:

There are continual performances all over the world.

Ironically, when he was in the "prog rock" group Soft Machine in the

70s, I bet he made no money whatsoever. The band had, at various times, Andy Summers (the Police) and Jack Bruce (Cream) as members.

Another Dave

No matter what appeared for the Proms you'll never satisfy everyone!

Its been quite a good year thus far and do remember its a popular concert series, it would have been what you heard at Vauxhall Pleasure gardens waay back when.

I've been to quite a few over time and one thing which is gratifying to see is the number of young people in the audience and for that matter on the stage, the National Youth Orchestra were very good this year

Saw them a few years ago now performing Oliver Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony complete with Cynthia Millar playing the original electric keyboard and wire instrument the Ondes Martenot.

Just go there and enjoy!, the atmosphere is like no other anywhere!...

It was originally a bit of a wild old time, punch ups and the like if the audience didn't like the music!..

Enjoy Messiaen?

It does - read it - they reference the abolition of the *bourgeois* family. They never prescribe what it will be replaced with.

Socialism will determine an end to capitalism. I've not suggested anything - it's what they suggest and you don't seem to understand.

Nope, capitalism will never end, there will always be a mix of capitalism and socialism.

I've not suggested anything -

In Marxist theory, and many related theories, it will end. In practice nobody

- except you - knows.

What do you think they suggest? Not holding my breath :-)

Was he really in 'soft machine' ? I saw them several times. Weren't really very good.

Jack Bruce ruined everything.

Capitalism at it's most basic is two or more people pooling their resources to do something neither could afford on their own

And then claiming ownership of the result. Well you would, wouldn't you?

Imagine there you are a nice neolithic hunter gatherer but you had a brainwave, you and your brother worked together to build a fenced compound and drove deer into a stockade so you didn't have to hunt them

- you could shoot them from the fence instead.

The along comes some f****ng socialist who is crap at flint work and yells 'not fair you have all those deer and I have none. Filthy capitalist swine! All property is theft' and steals one every day.

Naturally you drive him off with sticks and he yells 'Fascist pig!

I had a GF once who went to Rwanda to see the gorillas amongst other things. She said that is pretty much how it goes between the farmer and herder Rwandans and the pygmys, who just steal (hunt and gather) anything that isn't bolted down . She also said that the pygmys stink something rotten.

The Rwandans hate them . But it isn't racism, because the Rwandans are black. Or something

Nothing 'naturally' in what you say. Capitalism is a human construct. Have a look at some of David Groeber's work.

I'm sure there's a point in there somewhere . . .
