OT: Thunderbird issue

I'm finding increasingly that TB randomly decides to display threads - in this and other NGs - in so-card 'card view' (tabbed) rather than as normal threads. It can do it with some threads, but not others, in a single NG. It's not something which affects just some NGs>

Anyone else getting this problem, and is there a known solution? I can't find any settings which seem to be relevant.

Thanks.

I don't use it, but AFAIK the whole of TB is in card view, or table view, can't see how some messages can display in tabbed view screenshot so we can tell whether what you're seeing *is* card view?

Card view is a summary for deep threads. If a thread had only one message, assembling a card view would be pointless.

A guess is, you're in card view, and it is working as intended.

Now, you have to get out of card view.

There are controls. I don't keep this diagram up to date as they release new versions.

Or he's in table view with

"mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads=true"

so it depends whether you're focused on a thread, or on a message within a thread, and seeing "conversation view" for the former ...

Many thanks for the replies - which I'm afraid I don't understand!

So, to illustrate the problem better, I've created two screen-shots - both from UK.D-I-Y - and in quick succession.

The first is looking at the thread "Top of the Pops . . " which I consider is being displayed normally.

The second is what I get when clicking on the thread "Watering 4-Way Splitter" which I consider is being displayed abnormally.

WHY are these two threads being displayed differently, and what am I doing wrong?

FWIW, I'm using TB 115.6.0

Yes, that is "conversation view" of all messages in a thread (not cards view) if you don't like it, go to tools/settings/general/config editor

A partial search for "operate" should locate the setting for mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads click the toggle button, so it says false and goes bold (to show it's no longer on the default value)

Job done

In the first the thread in the list of threads is unfolded, ie you can see a list of all the messages in it and the icon to its left is a V

In the second the thread is folded, ie you just see the thread title on one line and the icon to its left is a >

If you click on the thread when folded, you see the 'conversation view' in your message panel. If it is unfolded then clicking on a specific message, you see that message. If you're seeing the conversation view because it's folded, clicking on the > to the message's left turns it into a V and unfolds it, showing the first message.

In the conversation view, you can also click on a 'Sender <email address>' in one of the snippets and it'll unfold the thread and open that message.

(TB 115.9, only used for email)

If you expand the thread clicking on the > symbol or Shift * you will get what you call the normal view.

If you expand the thread by clicking on the subject text (to the right of the > symbol) you will get the alternative view you show in the second screen shot.

I think that's the problem. I'm still using TB `102.14.0 as whenever I have tried any more recent version it works badly with Usenet News. TB 102 nags me to upgrade almost every day and I can't find out how to stop the nagging, but that's a small price to pay. I think downgrades to TB 102 are still findable on the net.

I'm using 115.11.1 with no issues. That's with both Eternal September and Individual.net.

Apart from changing one thing* I used TB 115.xx is working fine here with Win11.

I previously had unread usenet articles with bold red text and that stopped working with 115.xx until someone pointed to what I had to change in the "userChrome.css" file

I changed the userChrome.css version in Windows\Users\my user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\zn76m5rn.default\chrome to include: (zn76m5rn probably is version dependant)

@namespace xul("

"); @namespace html "

";

#threadTree tbody [data-properties~="hasUnread"] { color: orangered !important; background-color: whitesmoke; }

#threadTree tbody [data-properties~="unread"] { font-weight: bold !important; color: red !important }

Now any collapsed thread a with a unread post has red text.

Expanding the thread and the unread post is red BOLD text.

When all posts in the thread have been read the text reverts back to the default black.

Also I have a default white background to the text but the above changes the background to a subtle off white background for threads with unread posts.

No, "zn76m5rn" is random so that malicious code doesn't know the path to files in your profile ...
