OT: Things to come

When everyone is assigned an annual standard carbon footprint limit by law. Those that have more than one child are sterilised, because the maintenance of the world population level is becoming critical, or if nothing is done, nature will take over. No more wars, or religious excesses.

Don't be silly, the eco-warriers will never mention the elephant in the room that is population growth ...

Why do you think that?

The UK (and most developed countries) already have a well below replacement level birth rate. Governments are worried that a fall in births will leave a shortage of working age people and have compensated by allowing high levels of immigration.

Where have I heard that one before... grin. To maintain population you need more than one child per family, since not everyone will be paired off and have children. Unless you can make this happen everywhere, the population will get skewed toward whichever race or mental trait does not limit their birth rate. Its already happening if you look around. Now this may or may not be a bad thing of course, but I certainly feel that there is about as much hope of Humans actually controlling their numbers voluntarily, than coming back and running a mobile Ice Cream business. Most of the hits refer to needing to feed growing population and the impact of climate on population, not impact of population on climate ...

Population control is very simple, educate women. Wherever women have become educated the birth rate has dropped and while it *may* not be causal there are lots of arguments that suggest it is.

Agreed, but also reducing infant mortality and improving prosperity in places like India resulted in *families* deciding to have fewer children. One of the reasons Ehrlich's predictions in Population Bomb were so wildly wrong.
