But they can't do that. They can only set *minimum* workers' rights that all EU members must follow. Individual member states are free to set its workers' rights at a higher level than that.
France (let's be clear who we are talking about here) had already set its workers' rights at a higher level than the other EU states, so it was in French employers' interests that other member states be forced to increase *their* workers rights.
UK does a great line in avoiding giving workers rights which makes them so much easier to make redundant than elsewhere in the EU. It will be even worse after we leave and multinational companies retrench.
UK employers are also notable for preventing Armistice Day 11/11 being a public holiday - even the Americans manage to do that as Veterans Day! Australia and New Zealand have Anzac Day 25/4 for Gallipoli instead.
Tell that to the average UK delivery driver. He'd be delighted to know he is protected by EU law.
