OT: Scottish Power's Systems - a mess?

Scottish Power has not billed the community hall, for which I am responsible, since Feb 2014. It should be billed quarterly. I have emailed and phoned but get confusing stories. Several other people I have spoken to have problems with SP.

I wondered if you d-i-y people have come across problems? I cannot find anything on-line that indicates the state of their systems being as bad as I suspect.

Been with them for a couple of years and it's been fine, although they tried to increase my DD a couple of months ago, for no discernable reason but dropped it back again in response to my phone call and have voluntarily reduced it little more this month . Having said that, I'm presently off to the Co-op.

They have the cheapest leccy doon sooth (about 12p/unit)

But they cocked up my direct debit and "forgot" to charge me for about 5 months, meaning that I'm now paying extra rather than having a bit in the pot to cover the winter season.

Unless there is anyone else as cheap I'll have to stay put - EDF were told to f*ck off when they tried to jack me up to 15p/unit.

My friend has been done out of over £60 by a mistake on last year's bill - he has been unable to make them see what the error is on the telephone - they just keep saying the computer makes adjustments so it is correct. (There was a price change and they made the start of the new price a lower reading than the end of the previous price).

My problem with them has been their estimating the bill when the meter was read 3 days before the estimate - but they ignored the actual reading.

I've had that (and with other suppliers before) I just do a new reading and it re does the bill. Actually I give them monthly readings normally, so I generally avoid it

I've been with a them a couple of years and not had any problems though.

Wow you got through to them on the phone!

When I switched away from them a while back they 'forgot' to credit me what they owed me on the final bill. Had to wait nearly an hour on hold to get through to them. Very glad I've got hands free on my phone and free calls!

I have had this with my supplier (not SP) but when I look in detail the difference between the reading and the estimate is minimal. I guess their programe does an estimate for 3 days usage to match the billing date exactly. Its not (so far) been a big issue.

The have been in trouble recently IIRC it was mentioned on the radio.

When I was with them for a few years their administration was fine.

I moved to M&S-SSE whose administration was hopeless.

I wrote my original because I suspected there is a major problem with SP's systems. So many of the anecdotal things I picked up involved SP NOT demanding money they were owed. Several people reported that their direct debits were not being collected. Perhaps this is normal for such systems but this is my fist experience. (BTW I am also a domestic SP customer but nothing untoward is happening on that front?) Frank

That sounds like BT's method of changing their rates, which was (is still?) like the three card trick. Pre-charge for a month at £X, then change the rate in the middle of the month. Credit for some days at £X, then re-charge the rest at £Z. But I could never match their calculations, so I left.

SSE does that with me. I submit a reading, it is accepted, and then I get a message saying that the system cannot calculate my bill at the moment. And the bill, when I get it, has a different reading on it from what I sent them.

Maybe it's built in Energy Companies' software?

One of the suppliers (and I can't recall if it was SP or someone else) is in a complete mess with its computer systems and hasn't billed some customers for a year - it's been covered on Radio 4's consumer program a few times. IIRC, the regulator is on the virge of banning them from taking on any new customers because of their inability to get a new computer system working.

I did mention SP did not bill me for some months buggering up the winter pot I thought I was topping up.

You've reminded me, must check to see they are still being dorks.

Oh - they take forever (like 40-60 minutes) to answer the sodding phone.

Time to check and see if anyone else is doing leccy for less than

13p/unit...

I have Extra Energy "Fixed Price Sep 15 v2" 11.33p/unit 23.594/day £25 exit. Watch that large standing charge if use is low.

For low use nPower "Price Fix April 2015 Elec DD" 14.91p/unit no other charges.

Both of those are probably no longer avialable as they were taken out in April/May last year. Comparison sites and a spreadsheet are your friends.
