OT: Quicken free, anybody?

Intuit has mad available, FOC as an aid to updating to modern versions, Quicken 6 for Macintosh Quicken 6 for Windows Quicken 99 for Windows Quicken 2000 for Windows Quicken 2003 for Windows Quicken 2004 for Windows (it's the Deluxe version).

Perhaps best to go to TinyApps first and follow the link (I'm always nervous about Intuit as even Q'98 tried to get on line once).

The one I got was Canadian. However if you just ignor the $ sign and read it as £ it works fine.

Ah, I wondered why I couldn't get it to go to £. Sesms daft, not having the choice or just picking up the system's setting.

Thats because you couldnt buy Quicken in this Country for a number of years, so they didnt bother with any localisation.

It was a real pain in the Mac world then, as Quicken was pretty much the only accounts program available. There were some others, mainly shareware, then along came OS X, and Fink became available, which is better then Quicken, but not so user friendly. Intuit then released a OS X native version, but strangely didnt bother updating it, again. So they lost more users.

Well, Q98 (and Q5 before that) certainly understands pounds, so why not later versions? Or are you saying that they *stopped* offering it in this country?

Yes. maybe around 1998-2002?. I have Q2004 for Mac here, that is US only, after that they did allow imports on a newer version, but IIRC, my system couldnt cope with the newer version so I never got it, just stuck with Q2004. There were various US sellers doing a download version, but you couldnt buy it as you needed a USA address (maybe Canada too) to get it.

I'm running an old Quicken 2002 fine on Windows 8, except for everything now being manual, with no automatic Web updates possible - The Motley Fool and other links disappeared shortly after Quicken went US only.

This was re-installed last on a new Windows 7 system that was later "upgraded" to Windows 8. This uses my original database from earlier Quicken versions so I have records back to 1990 at least (Just checked my bank account archive...)

I had to do a clean system install of Windows 7 when I got this system, which is a self-build I7. I installed my Quicken system from a copy on my NAS hard-drives. There was (is?) a note about the registration procedure if you were re-installing an old registered version and couldn't go through the new procedure to get it authorised.

Here it is: Quicken registration If you do not wish to use Quicken online, then let me explain how you can disable registration. With the Quicken program open, hold down the Ctrl + Shift keys on the keyboard, and go to the Online menu. From the Online menu choose One Step Update. After selecting One Step Update, with Ctrl + Shift still held down, you will receive a message that states, "You will no longer be prompted for registration."

At this point registration is disabled and you will not receive any further messages regarding it. These instructions will work for Quicken 2003-2005. For Quicken

2001-2002 you will need to use the Finance menu instead of the Online menu. All other instructions are the same.

I wish I could find an acceptable alternative to Quicken... I've tried Accountz, but you have to start simple and learn it's methods rather than trying to start from being a Quicken user ... Any suggestions?

I think I'll stick with Q98 (+Y2K update) then. I'm running it on W7 Pro

32-bit, and it does everything I need. I'm only using it for personal accounts (Current/Savings/Credit cards, etc.) plus the accounts of a couple of voluntary organisations which I manage. No need for VAT or stocks and shares, or for doing anything online. The only problem I had was that I needed to issue the occasional invoice for one of the voluntary organisations - and the invoice function wouldn't work in W7 for some odd reason - so I had to revert to XP running in a virtual machine. But I don't need invoices any more, and can do everything in W7.
