OT; new websites

Hi

I've owned the domain names;

for a while, mainly to stop others using them. I've now had them made into independent web sites so Google will hopefully find them.

Any comments appreciated.

They used to redirect to my main site, so you may have to hit 'refresh'.

I have said it before, but I will say it again; your site needs more pizzazz. You are in a competitive market and, even if you are happy with the amount of work you are getting now, you still need to make one of your main selling tools work for you. It is your customers' window on your business and they will judge you by it.

You've got a duplicated paragraph. Otherwise OK.

The pictures would be more flattering if they showed the decking in use (at least with furniture on them). People buy decking to use, not to stare at the bare decking. You should ask to come back and take a picture when they've started using it, and when it's sunny. Pictures of empty decking under a cloud are not appealing.

"click here" argh hate it, comes from people to lazy to produce a proper descriptive link.

Repetition: 2nd and 3rd paras.

Page width set to high for my liking, I browse in a window not full screen. Widths over 1000 pixels are likely to present horizontal scroll bars, that don't get used. I'd missed you phone numbers top right, which are also in too narrow a container so wrap at every space.

Resize the images, half a 400 kbytes plus for a 340x227 image is way over the top.

Close up of the timber surface is out of focus.

The text above the three images of rotten timbers doesn't make it clear if they are the result of using treated timbers or not.

General width and layout issues as decking site.

Generally a plain and simple site. might be worth adding a generic page footer with contact details back link and copyright. Also indicates that a page has finished and just not fully loaded for some reason.

The obvious one would be the images sizes are way over the top (its downloading much bigger images and resizing them for display). That makes them slow to load. If you want the option to click through to bigger images then you need two copies - the preview and the size its used, and then the bigger one that can be selected individually. The photos could also do with some processing to give them a bit more "zing" and fix the dodgy colour balance.

Broken link - decking FAQ takes you to the pictures.

Some nice sunny "lifestyle" images would also help.

Seconded. AVG reports 'high memory usage' by Firefox for the decking pictures page, and suggested I restarted the browser!

The Medway Handyman scribbled...

The main site is peppered with "we" when it should be "I", you're not the Medway Handymen. Try personalising it with your first name on the pages. Tell 'em any visits/estimates will be made by Dave/You. Give up on the "we are honest" theme, you say it far too often, it sounds like a dodgy double glazing firm.

We offer - I install

Offer them the opportunity to see you make stuff in your workshop, proving you don't buy it in.
