OT: Mobile phone

I know that this is not the sort of thing this ng is about but I wonder if anyone here can help with this problem - or direct me to a ng or site that could?

I have just aquired a second mobile phone, a Sagem myx-2. The phone was bought second hand knowing it had a duff battery. Replaced the battery and put in my own sim card. It switches on ok now but comes up with the message 'PayT lock' - anyone know what this means?

It probably needs unlocking in order to use the SIM you've put in it. Phone the provider it's locked to and they may well unlock it free - Virgin do.

I'm fairly certain there are websites which describe how to unlock a phone -- I've seen things mentioned in the nokia newsgroup -- and most mobile accessory market stalls offer unlocking.

Do a search in some of the mobile phone newsgroups and you'll probably turn up way more advice than you need... ;)

It means that the phone was originally supplied with a subsidy from a specific mobile operator who wants to retain customers on his network. One way to do that is to lock the handset to only accept his SIM cards.

You've put in one from a different operator and hence the message.

It is possible to get them unlocked or to buy a cable and software for doing so. Whether that is economic is another thing.

I know that the phone is locked to Vodaphone - and the sim I have put in is a Vodaphone one.

It could be specifically locked to their pay-as-you-go service or a contracted service and you are trying to go for the other.

Try calling their help line. Make yourself a coffee first though :-)

Probably locked to the original provider. The other ng will be able to help re unlocking...

Vodaphones pay as you go style service is called "Pay As You Talk" or PAYT. Based on your message, it is locked to only PAYT SIMs and your new SIM is a contract one.

I am assured that it was on 'Pay-As-You-Go' previously - as my sim is - so this is all very confusing.

Does it have a Vodafone symbol printed on the front or come up as a start up logo? If not then it isn't locked on Vodafone. Another reason could be the age of your sim card. If it is very old it may be one of the old 5v sims which will not work in many later models as they use 3.3v cards only.

It has no Vodafone logo, either on the phone or at start-up - I am assured though that it is Vodafone. The sim card idea sounds very plausible though, I have heard this elsewhere and - since the sim card must be 6 years old - it seems a very likely bet.
