OT: Losing internet connection

A bit strange...

All lights on the modem are as they should (i.e. green, and on/not flashing), but on 3-4 occasions this week my connection suddenly died (usually overnight, but also during the day). A quick reboot of the modem seem to fix this.

My ISP, Plusnet, mentions something about maintenance (not in my area though, but could be related), but I thought that if the connection is dead then the light on the modem should reflect it? Am I missing a trick here?

Is it the ADSL connection that's failing, or is it your (wireless?) connection to the modem?

If either the ISP connection or the physical connection under it failed, then the light(s) would come on.

At least 2...

There are 3 levels of 'connection'..

1/. The DSL link to the exchange or cabinet DSLAM. 2/. The ATM backhaul to the ISP. 3/. The authentication and establishment of an IP link over that ATM backhaul.

Beyond that, there is another level of connectivity within the ISP itself and beyond to the Internet itself, but Plusnet presumably has that covered.

Depending on the modem/router the 'light' may only reflect a 'goodness' in the first area.

mots of the ones I have used move from red/out to flashing green to steady green as more linkages are established, but without knowing more about yours I can't say.

The price you pay for not having confusing lights on the box is that you are in the dark (sic!) when stuff doesn't work,

If there are advanced diagnostics on the modem or router, use em!

No. Plusnet service has been getting worse for the last 3 months here in the Leics. area. I'm constatnly getting drop-outs and 'not connected messages', yet when I ring them up, they say there is nothing wrong with the connection, but ring us back if it continues. The 'connected' led on the modem always stays on. It is time dependent too, early morning is usually good, mid-morning, and it starts delaying and dropping out. Please follow up if you get anywhere.

I doubt there's anything Plusnet specific about it.

My line has tended to suffer a bit in damp weather, also it lost speed in each of a couple of cable thefts in the area.

You'll notice BT have been doing lots of blocked duct work for fibre in the area, maybe that's upset a few marginal copper cables? If you've got any audible crackling on the voice circuit, report *that* rather than a broadband fault.

connection is

Add a couple of more:

-1/. WiFi and/or ethernet connection problem.

0/. Ethernet switch or router thrown a wobbly.

Diagnosis really needs start at -1 and work forwards. ping and/or traceroute are your friends. B-)

All our recent outages/poor service have been at 2/. above, dodgey fibre from the local exhange to Hexham producing anything from 1 to

100% packet loss. As show up by pinging my ISPs gateway and getting packet loss but not from the WAN IP of the modem. All the local diagnostics of the ADSL link were happy, no significant number of errors, stable connection, sensible sync speed, etc.

If this coincides with Afro Caribbean Friday, it's probably just that the system is overloaded

I've not had problems with my BT fibre connection as such - but have often had problems logging on to the BT email connection. Or rather downloading from it. In the main I use a 123 reg pop box and it seems to always get to that ok, but hangs when it checks the BT address. Frequently, but not always.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

Managed to get to Plusnet website from my phone (signal is very poor in the house, so relying on booster connected to the [not working] internet...)

They had a major service outage - now restored.

This was shown at the time on their website. As I found using my mobile phone hotspot.

If you have one of the Technicolor 582n routers they are good at indicating where any connectivity problems lie.

Well the fault might be further away, ie it could be loss of connection to the net but the modem is still connected to the local bit. A while back, Virgin had a nameserver issue so everyone using their name server lost the ability to get to named sites, but if you reconfigured the system to use a numeric address of another server it kept working. Worth noting that 123-reg POP3 access is normally reliable, but IMAP access varies enormously from "OK" to practically unusable. (much seems to be pot luck as to which server ends up carrying the mailbox etc)
