OT - Job creation Idea

Have you noticed the number of metal road / railway bridges that badly need painting. I seem to recall in my childhood that they were done often. Now they just seem to be rusting. Perhaps there is a view that they have passed their expected life - but a lot really look in bad condition. I think it is a trend to omit maintenance of most things nowadays. I hate to think what the newer steel buildings will look like in a few years when the paint starts to flake.

But it would be against their yuman rights, and elfin safety wouldn't allow it, and the National Union of Transport Surface Network Bridge Overpainters Letterers Tighteners and Sweepers would kick up.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Phil L" saying something like:

Hah, I'm not expecting the bullshit about the Forth Rail Bridge to be true - forty years or somesuch bollocks until it next needs painting. What they seem to have forgotten is the painting crew were an essential set of eyes on the bridge structure and continually spotted missing bolts and other parts ready to fall off.

I wonder if there is some kind of cladding that would protect the metalwork and also reduce the sound of trains going over the bridge. There are a couple of bridges a kilometre away that make an incredible noise in the middle of the night.

Tempting. But that stuff is not cheap and I'm not paying. I think the steel would rust without being able to be seen. Covering in concrete would make it quiet but the steel would still rust I think the answer is to have concrete bridges in the first place. Or sound deadening sleepers under the rails.
