OT: Is there a workaround to get back to the "old" gmail interface?

The new Gmail interface is a dreadful mess and there no longer seems to be a way to revert to the previous one - has anyone found a way? If Gmail doesn't provide a way to change back I'll be looking for a new email client - any suggestions?

Are we talking about using gmail on the web, or via a gmail app on a phone etc?

Gmail supports access via POP and IMAP (you need to turn it on in the settings "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab). Then you can use whatever email client you fancy... Thunderbird, Outlook, Windows mail (spit) etc...

That's what I do. Not that I use the gmail account for much, but when I do I both send and receive from that account without going near gmail itself.

It does, but you need to make some security changes on the gmail web page first. First you need to enable pop3 which is off by default, and then you need to allow mail connections from "less secure apps":

(turning that on will also send warnings to any linked google devices)

Then just setup as normal:

Pop3 works and so does imap, but not both of them. They also dire warnings when you set them up. I think they do not much like what I do, ie keep my address book locally so they cannot see it and snoop. It would not surprise me in the slightest if they stopped allowing clients in order to charge more for their adverts.I mean if your finance model was funding by adverts, then any system to bypass them by users is potentially losing you money. Same issue with ad blockers of course. My real gripe about adverts is that they are not checked for accessibility so when they are put inline into web sites they can completely stop blind use of a site. I seem to recall Google still offering a normal html version of their email site though I'd imagine its hard to find. They most certainly seem to know if you have a screenreader running as they put messages into the stream saying for best screenreader experience switch off google instant etc. But I do not particularly like their webmail anyway. I like one common interface so I use the fudged version of Outlook Express on windows 7. Brian

Took me about 5 mins to get working...

That's as maybe, but that does not mean it won't work for others.

I tried it here, TB 52.9.1 (Windows 32-bit) pop.gmail.com, port 995 SSL/TLS, Normal password

Appropriately enough, that page is completely blank in my browser, even with javascript switched on.
