Its the Battery car con ...... its a political stop gap expedient. Contrary to huge PR campaign, Battery cars are not the answer. Batteries are heavy, take a long time to charge, and capacity reduces with age ... and they fail.

2nd hand cars are going to nose dive in value ...... if a Tesla 3 battery fails outside of warranty you have to scrap the car ... a battery costs £20,000+ In the US they have seen a huge number of failures.

For me Hydrogen is the future - the most abundant element, produces power with zero emissions, and can be made form 100% green electricity.

And what is the range of a hydrogen car? You'll need special tanks in the car that can withstand the huge pressures needed to allow the tank to contain a viable amount of hydrogen. That's why hydrocarbon fuels are so good - large energy density, and liquid at room temperature, so an ordinary stell tank suffices.

Toyota has the Mirai with 300 mile range, unfortunately hydrogen filling points seem more than 300 miles apart (six inside the M25, plus three others in aberdeen, leeds and swindon) so you need a lorry following you as a "mobile hydrogen refueller"

Hyundai has the Nexo, with over 400 mile range

35mpg and a 5.5 gallon tank didn't get you far

Exactly. Hydrocarbon fuel in the 'petrol to diesel' sort of density is the sweet spot between being light but bulky and explosive, and too damned thick and heavy to burn easily.

If we had to dump fossil fuel we would have to synthesise diesel instead

- probably from nuclear power - if we could find a decent source of CO2 as there is too little in the air to use that easily.

Although I guess fractional distillation of liquid air might work

Pressure isn't so much an issue as leakage. And flammability. In a crash. Think 'Challenger'

First you need enough of that 'green' electricity. And that isn't going to happen any time soon.

Realistically, no-one actually knows what the final top figure will be, except that most people seem to agree that it will be about another India and China combined.

One of our kids is currently being held up because they and their neighbours are on the same "spur" off the main cable in the road. (Luckily the helpful neighbour has spare time for their access point which they can use, via a cable across the drives).

If you have available green electricity it is 3 x more efficient to use it to charge a battery vehicle than to use it to make hydrogen to use in a fuel-cell vehicle (75% vs 25%).

Whilst hydrogen cars produce zero emissions at the point of use (which is no bad thing) producing hydrogen chemically also produces large amounts of CO2. The most common process, steam methane reforming (SMR), produces

9-12 t of CO2 for every tonne of H2 produced. This process accounts for nearly 50% of global H2 production. Not great if this is all supposed to be about reducing CO2 emissions.

Ah yes, hydrogen. The fuel of dreamers.

Not saying it won?t have a place in transport (buses, lorries, trains, heavy machinery) but when it?s so easy (and *way* more efficient) to fuel your car with electricity at home I suspect we?ll be dead long before we have a hydrogen infrastructure.

In LA apparently a 45 minute queue to refill at one of their hydrogen stations is apparently not uncommon.

What part did you fail to understand? There?s nothing idiotic about buying an EV that can be charged at home, charged at every public charger and

*also* at an exclusive network of chargers that only Teslas can use.

That still has the problem that the tank is very heavy.

But not easy to dig up or even produce.

That's a lie, you still get some pollutants because it isn't feasible to use pure oxygen to burn it.

There is no such animal as 100% green electricity.

Pity about how difficult it is to store hydrogen and the energy required to compress it enough to be viable as a transport fuel.

It remains to be seen if hydrides will be viable.

How much carbon emissions does that represent?

Pity about your s*it about deserts. Not too many of those in the UK, stupid.

And they all agree it will start declining after it has peaked.
