I tried to purchase a set of 6 uplighter bulbs from Amazon this morning. For the grand sum of £9. Made in China, unfortunately, but they all seem to be. Even for this small sum, it asked me to wait for a 2-step code, to be entered onscreen. Code was there none. Again, and again, and again. My mobile has a good 4G signal. And I had previously checked the box that said that I did not need 2-step codes on this browser. I tried to get to Customer Service, but it asked me to sign in, which included sending in the Code that I was supposed to receive. Which again never came. Maybe it's a network problem, but whatever, it's not working. I found a 'phone number to call, and when I was told that I would have to wait about 30 minutes, I concluded that either they had a systemic problem today, or they really didn't want to sell me the bulbs. Sometime today, I will probably receive about ten codes all in quick succession.

I think AWS are having a bad day
2-step code to login to amazon, or 2-step code for bank payment verification?
The latter is often done on high value items, but may also be done for shady looking suppliers, my bank offers verification within their mobile app, instead of by SMS, maybe yours does too?
According to the news at 1000 Snapchat and some other phone app was down due to AWS issues.
Yes, I just saw that. Oh well, Amazon's loss. I love this internet-dependent world!
The former. But it appears that I was not the only one this morning.
-E-bay worked fine, so it got the deal.
There seems to be a widespread outage. See e.g.

It's surprising that Amazon's own staff did not know about this.
Amazon was/is having issues..

I have had this happen a few times, not just with Amazon.
What I found was that when (presumably) something was repaired I got a series of SMSs each with a (by then out of time) code.
So now if it happens I either give up to try later (after the series of SMSs) or like you I buy elsewhere.
They might have done, but I couldn't talk to any of them, unless I had waited for an estimated '30 minutes'. Because I could not receive a code, I could not communicate with Amazon at all.
