OT: Car insurance for youths

My 17 year old son has passed his test. Quotes via the comparison sites are all coming in over £3k and there's not much to be saved by him turning 18.

To save me hours on the phone, are there any specialised companies who genuinely look more favourably on the young? For example has anyone dealt with Adrian Flux? They claim to be cheaper but the web is littered with horror stories.

Ta.

You used to be able to get cheaper insurance by making your sons have a sex change. Alas, I think that door has been closed. Just because boys are more likely to write off a Corsa filled with their mates than girls, it seems that political correctness means that it's unfair to charge girls less.

Is that taking out a policy in his own name on his car?

It probably won't be long before I have to jump through these loops (No.1 Daughter is 17) but AIUI if you put "their" car on your insurance and have them as the named main (important!) driver it's not quite as eye watering. Not sure of the details, you may have to be the registered keeper, I'd have a dig about on Money Saving Expert or similar sites.

Or there are the various policies that include a GPS box that monitors the driving, drive well, the premium drops, drive badly up it goes. FSV'sO "well" and "badly".

Its the statistics that tend to suggest that the younger the driver and especially if they are male, the more likely they will have an accident. I was listening to a discussion about this the other day. tThe suggestion is that the male tends to take more risks when in the pubescent age range due to the way the brain is being rewired. Short of making special rubber cars for the young, if that is the case then its never going to change. Brian

If charging different rates for males/females was challenged as sexist, how come someone hasn't challenged charging different rates for old/young as ageist?

Yes. And I wouldn't touch them with a shitty stick.

They don't, because that would be illegal.

They wanted £4.5k anyway so their claims are bollocks.

It's gonna hurt no matter how you do it. Some companies offer "named driver discount" but this isn't the same as a transferable no claims discount.

Really, the sooner that they have their own policy and build up their own NCD the better. Careful choice of first car may help a little bit but don't expect it to make that much of a difference. Boringness of vehicle is probably more significant than speed/engine size.

My over-the-road neighbour got a substantial saving by having a tracker and a exclusion on midnight-5am for his lad. Co-op, IIRC.

Yup, we had both our cars insured by Shiela's wheel's at one point

They are just a brand of Esure, the main difference seems to pink branding and extra handbag insurance :-)

wonder if the OP's son would be happy to 'drive like a girl' :-) ? (they fit a 'black box' to record the driving and potentially get A discount. No idea if it actually saves much?

WWhat sort / value of car?

Apparently the classic VW Beetle is the cheapest car to insure (individual quotes may vary ...).

Anything over 1000cc or £5k is going to up the rates considerably.

He has a haircut like a girl so I doubt he'd have a problem.

I tried to get a quote on their website earlier but it's main purpose seems to be to waste the users time.

I'll give them a ring next week.

It's a V reg Pug 306, it's dog slow but the fact that it's a 1.4 works against it from an insuring point of view.

When you have dongers like this:

it's not surprising...

Hmm, think an involuntary sex change for him might not be a bad idea...

Can be cheaper if you add an adult as an additional driver. Made a big difference in our case. Worth a try.

Did that as well as listing him as employed (he has a part time job) and reducing his annual mileage to 6000 (dunno if that's feasible) gets it down to 2.8k.

Sounds like daylight robbery to me. Tried Direct Line have we?

I had a dream last night based on this thread. The dream was basically that everyone now had personal airships rather than cars. the premise being that the skies are bigger than roads, there are no junctions etc, to cause delays, so the fact they only poodle along at 30 miles an hour is of no consequence. However as I now realise in the daytime, there are a number of snags.

  1. Wind is not good for airships.
  2. Filling up with petrol could be a challenge.
  3. Helium tends to leak, and the world has a shortage of it.
  4. a mishap over a built up area might injure more than the pilots and passengers. Brian
