OT: Calendar s/w

I'm not anti-Linux by any means but, in my case, I just don't want the hassle. Windows, mostly, works. Once all the "superior user experience" has been turned off - my XP looks like Win98 etc - it just sits there looking after mouse and keyboard.

Ok, not a good reason but it's handy from the PoV of knowing how to fix other Windows PCs and it means I have an absolute menagerie of (mostly free) s/w at my fingertips. To me a computer is just a tool to achieve something and I do many and varied somethings. While Linux no doubt has a great archive of stuff, I don't think I could be bothered to run a dual boot system for the times I can't find something.

I'm indifferent about using Macs for the same reason.

I exaggerated. Took 2 minutes 40 seconds before it can be used. Probably AVG free slowing things down.

Gosh. is it still possible to do that? Oh. XP. yes, its still possible with XP.

So run a virtual machine.

Odd that broadly similar ideas about 'what we want' have led to completely defferent solutions.

And with Vista I've found. Fundamentally, Vista seems quite close to XP underneath; there just seems to be a load of services bolted in that don't really bring anything useful to the party beyond irritation and new bugs. Superfetch, User Access Control, whatever they replaced the already pointless Indexing Service with, etc.

Why? What does Linux offer me?

By rights, I'm exactly a run-a-linux box sort of person but I'm not sure why I'd do it. It's one of those ideas that always rattles about in the back of the head but I've never bothered. Mind you, last time I thought about it, it was dedicated boxes and dual boot so perhaps I might try a virtual machine.

Which suggests, relating to time, that for four days a year it doesn't. ;-)
