Thanks to MSE I see that Virgin mobile services now use the Vodafone network and offer 10GB data (+unlimited calls and texts) for £8/month. Currently I'm paying Vodafone nearly £14 for the same service so am planning to swap. I can't see any moans on the web about speed throttling so assume the 3G and 4G service will be the same as being direct with Vodafone - unless someone here knows otherwise ... ?

Have you considered Smarty (Three), 30GB for £10 month, no contract.

Unfortunately, only Vodafone have a decent signal where I spend most of my time.

In that case I should be vary careful before you switch to Virgin that they are indeed now using the Vodafone masts.

Where I live only the Vodafone and O2 masts give good indoor coverage. A neighbour on Virgin seems still to be on the EE masts because his indoor signal hasn't improved. I have been using Lebara (Vodafone) for several years and have no problems.

I've just found a page on the Vodafone web site which states that existing Virgin customers won't be switched over until December this year. You should be okay with a new Virgin SIM.

I should have said you should be okay with a new Virgin SIM provided you choose a 5G package. New 4G only will be on EE until the end of this year.

Thanks, there's no 5G here so it looks like a call to Virgin would be wise - I'll call them in the morning. I'd seen Lebara in the MSE comparison tool but ruled them out because I hadn't heard of them before and assumed they were a newbie that might flare and die. I'll do some more digging before taking the plunge.

I don't know how good they are, but my father has been using Lebara for a number of years now.

In case it's of interest to anyone else: Virgin mobile told me today that all new plans are now with Vodafone. I made the mistake of looking at a few review sites - the comments and ratings for Lebara and Virgin mobile are not good, but neither are those for Vodafone. I know most people who are happy with a service or product don't bother commenting on it, so reviews are inherently biased towards the negative, but it's hard not to be influenced.
