Useful to know John, thank you.

I like the built-in preview concept though as an intermediate check. I think it's polite to let people see the final destination before they follow it.

Just a shame that tinyurl have a habit of inserting affilate padding around links where they can to earn revenue. Not that common as most of my tinies aren't pointing at commercial sites but anoying nonethless.

That the registrar of .com has sold to a company, and they are now reselling sub domains of that - directly and via a handful of resellers. So indeed you are one step removed from traditional domain ownership experience, but other than the higher price of renewal it is not going to make any real difference to Tim, the fundamentals are basically the same.

Nice.

Til then I had not heard of Xojo :-)

The language platform looks interesting - somewhat akin to an OO Basic, with hints of OO Pascal tied up with a fairly rich component library.

Ta for the pointer

I have had working email sub domains on Zen for many years and as an existing customer when they changed their policy (late last year) I still have working email sub-domains. However, when I tried to edit one of them a couple of weeks ago the page from which you you quote wasn't working correctly. I contacted Zen support and a ticket was raised. Subsequent to that I had two emails requesting what I can see when trying to gain access to my sub-domain setup. A few days ago I had an email saying the problem had been fixed (at least for me). I can now see and change the sub-domain configuration.

The Zen (free) web space has gone for everyone (since last September I believe) and therefore the ftp into the web space is also no longer valid. Zen technical support said I should have had an email about this but I didn't see it. I may have just assumed that the email from Zen was just their monthly confirmation that they were going to take the DD and I just didn't bother reading it.

As an existing customer the legacy free (included in the basic contract price) email service (SMTP/POP3) can still be used. For new customers this is no longer offered. I assume that as with other Zen promised services you effectively become a new customer if YOU change your contract (or change from the same rolling one month contract after the initial 12/18/24 month period) I suspect that in future that you change to, say, FTTP from a connection method you have now the legacy email facility may cease.

Note: in the past when Zen upgraded me (not my request) they honoured their price promise not to increase the price whilst on the same service

- I was on the rolling 1 month contract. I was paying a price well below what they were advertising for years until I requested FTTP.

The legacy email sub-domain settings/configuration can only be seen in the old Zen customer portal. If in the new portal there is a link at the top of the web page to take you back to the old portal. There is no mention of email or web space in the new portal when you just have a broadband contract. There is no mention of email and web space in the current Zen advertising for a broadband connection. These services are offered elsewhere as a paid for add-on.

Ok. I think the next move is to point this out to Namesco and see if they come up with any offers of savings.

I theory I do have Internet access on my mobile but the keypad and screen are too small for practical use. Upside is I get 3 days battery life and it fits in a pocket.

Hmm. I pay an annual *rent* to Namesco.

John. Thanks for all the above. I am currently paid up until September (annual payment) but can use the time to sound out Namesco on cost reduction.

When I joined Namesco, there was some thought my wife would use the same hosting, hence the two mail boxes. In the event, she is happy with her i,phone.

I will *bank* your kind offer of further help and keep the group informed of progress.

Thanks to all contributors.

No, but it is similar.

You're welcome. It's nice for x-platform stuff, they also support mobile (iOS, Android), and web apps. It used to be known as RealBasic, AIUI.

Ok. I think I have enough to pressure Namesco. Thanks.

Thanks Tony. I'm winding up a pretended departure with a reluctant acceptance of a lower fee gambit:-)
