... is that she or he of they snips everything except that to which she or he or they is replying.

Many people here quote the whole of a post when replying such that the new material is off the bottom of the screen, and with so many hundreds of Usenet posts on a daily basis then it is too much of a palaver to page down so that your bon mots then get deleted without being read.

If following a thread there is little point to reproducing all that has been said previously.

ISTR that some years ago you were a vociferous proponent of top posting in Usenet posts. When did you have your Damascene conversion?

It's laziness that's crept in over recent years. Back in the day - going back 20+ years now, people invariably trimmed their follow-ups because of the cost of bandwidth. Now that's no longer a consideration, no one bothers. Shame!

The point is that those who don't read all the posts get to see the context.

BULLSHIT.

We swooned at your snippage.

Which is in my view, why top posting is often better. I never did understand why usenet wants bottom posting. I understand that many of the old Dos and Unix news readers could hide lines which had the greater than at the start, so in effect you did not have to read the quoted text at all. Brian
