Yes, they started off by saying that a smart meter would save you hundreds per annum. They than had to admit it was more like an average of £15 per annum but this was probably a bit misleading because it coincided with many people replacing traditional light bulbs with low energy bulbs given away for "free" by the energy companies (free as in that you actually paid for them in the stealth green tax in your bill).
It's now being sold as "save the fragile National Grid" because the UK has adopted the wrong policy for renewable energy.
