on-off extractor fan

I have an oldish extractor fan in a small loo which is linked to the light switch. It has recently started to switch itself on and off whilst the light is still on. Any ideas what the problem is and how can I sort it out?

Depends whether it has a run-on timer in it or not as to nwhat is the most likely cause of the failure. If it were me I'd get a new one for what they cost, (circa £20 for a

4" with timer).

I'd isolate it, take the cover off and remove the 2cwt of fluff and dust that collects on and inside extractor fans. Then see if it keeps shutting down before going out to buy a new one...

May be a humidistat one.

a loo hooked upto a light switch - that could make you get up sharpish! As for having an extractor fan in it as well, surely that would leak?

Does the fan have a "run on" timer? could be that has gone barking. Check the supply to the fan and make sure that does not go off when the fan does, and if ok, replace the fan. If it is the supply going on and off then that sounds like a loose wire in the supply to the fan.

The toilets on the shuttle use extractor fans, to ensure everything departs cleanly on exit. Otherwise, you can get quite messy blobs...

But only if you are still sat on it when the fan starts huh? ;-)

No, the fans are running when you start. If they are not, that's what leads to the mess, as there is nothing to make the blobs go into the toilet otherwise.

I guess we are talking space shuttle here? Thinking about the effect on ordinary everyday activities kind makes you appreciate gravity huh?

I wonder when the first on-topic post from space about DIY will be made.
