I've removed the existing light fitting from my front room and now I'm left with the old socket in the roof and a replacement modern light fitting I want to attach but the moderm fitting does not attach to the old socket. How do I solve this?
Thanks

By 'old socket', I presume you mean a bayonet type bulb holder and a ceiling rose. Your new fitting is possibly directly wired, so you will need to remove the old fitting. Depending on the age of the wiring, the existing fitting may be of the 'loop-in' type and will have more than just three wires. A loop-in system will have feeds to the next lighting point and also connections for the switch. Hopefully, your new fitting will be compatible with this arrangement and have the necessary connections. Make a note of the wiring in the old fitting and make sure to switch off at the mains before dismantling. If in doubt, consult an electrician.
