Well then they're idiots. Partly solved by batteries, yes, and maybe largely solved at some point in the future.

But anybody claiming any knowledge of energy supply in the UK knows that the solution on current technology is a variety of sources.

Of course. Nuclear and gas will give a reliable and cheap supply.

But ask yourself why we’re paying 25p/kWh when say 10p will give the generator a profit.

And for the average home, a battery will never pay for itself over its lifetime.

Privatised supply and an industry that exists to feed corporate wealth. And anyway, I don't pay anything like 25p - more like half that.

A lot of things don't make sense on that site, not least the 'honest maths'.

Also, there's mention of off peak import, but it's not included in any calculation for some reason. That's one of the main money (and environmental) savers battery-wise.

No they also want more pumped storage, more generators in rivers, more wave generation, more tidal generation and when you add in some future unobtainium you have the long term solution. There never seems to be any understanding of the scale of the problem nor the cost to implement all of these sticking plaster solutions.

It may be solved by batteries one day, when the kind of batteries that E. E. Smith's Lensmen used are finally invented, they needed half the output of a 20th century power station to charge...

But that needs some major advances in physics, I doubt that chemical batteries can ever reach the kind of storage needed to be practical.

It will be interesting to see if the government's AI surveillance data centres will run on renewables. They'll just need a big UPS.
