I came across a (orange juice) carton recently which had a variant of the 'attached screwtop' design. It _looked_ like the usual screw cap, but refused to unscrew, and seemed to only have a thread around part of its circumference. You had to take a firm grip on it, distort the plastic whereupon it flipped open to one side (drinking directly from the carton would be a struggle). To close, you again had to squeeze the opening so that the partial 'thread' would re-engage. There was little to get a grip on, even for someone with strong hands.

I do understand the wish to design for easy recycling (once you have consumed the contents), but if it prevents you getting at the contents in the first place?!?

Indeed so, but it has no more legislative power than the EU Parliament. It can delay and advise, but not change or veto. Which is OK for the HoL, but not for the alleged EU Parliament, as it means that the EU is governing without any consent of the governed.

I don't follow - the EU has MEPs - there is consent as they're elected. And it debates, amends and passes laws, so has power. Very unlike the HoL which at best has influence.

The EU parliament cannot introduce legislation, nor repeal it. The legislative programme is decided entirely by the Commission, an entirely unelected body - as we just saw with Ursula.

And the MEPs are elected via the egregious List System, meaning that (a) someone at the top of their party's list is guaranteed to get in and so you can't get rid of them and (b) there are no by-elections, so if an MEP resigns or kicks the bucket from eating too much via their unmonitored expenses, then the next in the list gets the nod.

If you call that democratic then I have a bridge to sell you. Several in fact.
