Noise from water tank filling

Presumably the water was turned off at an indoor or outdoor stopcock while the recent work was done? I it possible the stopcock was previously only part-open, and is now full-bore? Might be worth a quick check ...

"pipe vibration against joists/etc?" Nothing was changed regarding putting in new pipes so I doubt if pipe vibration as against the joists.

The indoor stop c*ck was turned off so might be worth playing around with that.

The humming noise just started just a few days ago and nothing has been touched for a month. Just had a thought I have been in the attic doing some electrical work and crawling around up there, I wil check when I am back up as maybe I have disturbed a pipe of place a box or something on a pipe to get access.

These humming/drumming noises can be a right begger to cure, they don't obey the rules, the cause is resonance and all manner of things can affect how a system resonates.

I insulated and added few clips to the otherwise free floating rising main to our loft tanks, that set off the "filling hum". Had to loosen clips to cure it.

What was done?

The clunk is usually a pipe moving when a tap is suddenly turned off, and it's hitting something it didn't used to, either due to having been moved, and/or a changing in the pipe clips or fittings.

A hum or vibration is often caused by feedback in the tank valve, e.g. the shutoff causes a small ripple in the tank, which lets in another spurt of water, which causes a ripple in the tank, etc... The feedback can be across the water surface as above, or movement in the tank sides and/or valve mounting.

Another possibility which might cause this is a cushion of air trapped in a dead-leg of pipework, which will significantly change the dynamics of what happens when the water pressure changes momentarily due to a tap or tank valve shutting off.

I resited the washing machine so he moved the supply feed along a couple of feed, that I can understand the for the `clunk`its the humming noise that only started a few days ago as all the other stuff was done about 4 weeks back. As I previously mentioned I have been working in the attic (electrics) and maybe I have disturbed some pipework, the timing of the humming starting does coincide with my time in the attic. So I think that will be my starting point.

Last time I had this happen, it was caused by tiny pieces of crap in the ball valve diaphragm seat. Is it possible that some such grunge has been disturbed in your system by the work that you had done, and it has now been swept up to your loft tank, to come to rest in the valve ? Mine did clean up ok, but the diaphragm was looking a bit worse for wear as I recall, so was ultimately replaced. Could also be that your valve was also in less than perfect condition, and the stop tap now being at a different setting has exacerbated the situation, as others have suggested.

For some strange reason it has stopped making the humming noise, dont know why, when I have some time I am going to raplace the stop c*ck valve for all they cost, the current one will be years old. I will getting free loft insulation shortly (May) so worth doing any work up there before its laid.
