Something deep in my memory is telling me that 70 to 75 dB is the noise a jet engine makes during take-off, so I give it at least 200 metres!! Of course I could be wrong - I'm getting old :S - tried googling it?!?! _________________________________ The Grim Reaper

Its the noise level of a generator that I am looking at... it will be roughly 25m away from any house and about 3m away from me (through a wall to the outside) so I just wondered HOW noisy/quiet that it would seem - real world experience here, not google literature.

If you ran it at night or for hours on end near me it would end up in the canal. Would you want someone near you running a lawn mower for hours on end?

The 100kVA super-silenced generator we use for our festival is (during the daytime) inaudible at about 7m distance - i.e. you can't hear it over the ambient noise (this is before the "loud" bands come on in the evening by the way). You can stand next to it an hold a (nearly) normal conversation. Obviously, the higher the load, the louder it is.

We run it all night and get no complaints. The nearest people sleeping to it are in a tent about 25m away.

If your bedroom window is double glazed and it's only idling, I expect you would be able to hear it, but it would be quieter than, say, a tranny van idling outside your bedroom window. If your window was open, you'd be getting the fumes from the exhaust ;-(

Smaller generators (e.g. 20kVA road-towable from HSS) have have less soundproofing and a higher-pitched note which is more intrusive.

Well surely the 68dB is totally meaningless without a distance - doesn't the genny quote that along with the dB?

It means very little unless you know what sort of 'dBs'. The human ear is non linear to frequency, for example.

The only reason I can see to use a generator is you're too far away from a mains supply so that should include neighbours?

I'd not be pleased if someone next door was running a generator in their garage etc at the end of their garden...

Or put the thing in a brick or block enclosure.

I had been considering this option but will wait and see how noisy it turns out to be.

Late evening even in an urban environment that might be too much. A lot of it is down to perception. I used to live in Hounslow, right under the glidepath to Heathrow. The planes weren't a bother, but the pub behind the house had an AC unit that hummed really annoyingly.

Reminds me of where I used to live. An old retired guy several doors down bought himself a new lawnmower that sounded just like a dentist drill. He only used it at weekends (to show it off?). I once had to use great restraint not to pay him a visit one Saturday when I was having major dental work done in the afternoon. To say I don't like dentists is an understatement.
