No Heating or Hot Water .....

Help! Why do things like this only happen this time of of year ? No Central Heating or Hot water.

Programmer working, pump working, zone values working. This is the limit of my diagnostic skills.

Boiler (Potterton Netaheat Mark 2F 16/22)

- fan noise starts

- pilot light ignites

- nothing else happens

What's the problem likely to be ? and what'll it cost to fix in SW london/surrey area ?

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

Well, it's obviously a boiler problem!

I don't know this boiler but - for whatever reason - the main gas valve isn't opening. This could be a problem with the valve itself or with the PCB (I presume it's got one!) which drives it.

Do you have an installation manual, with a diagnostic chart? Is there a chart on the boiler itself, inside a removeable bit of casing? You really need to work through a diagnostic chart in order to pinpoint the actual problem.

Does the boiler have an overheat cutout, which requires a button to be pressed to reset it? If so, does it need re-setting? [This seems unlikely, since the fan and pilot work, but it's *just* possible depending on what functions are disabled by the cutout].

Flame sense circuit gone on the pcb HT lead broken (check it for continuity) Electrode not in the pilot flame (visual check) Bad earth (check for continuity) Knackered gas valve (are there 230 volts to the gas valve connectors?)

does it have a black ignition module or an electronic sequence pcb (407676)?

If it gets as far as lighting the pilot your problem is in the boiler. For a simple start check that the "plug" connecting the power to the gas valve is fully engaged then if it is check that power is being applied to the main gas solenoid by the PCB. Also check there is a dc continuous path between the ignition (spark and sense) electrode and the connection to the PCB. (Remember to isolate the power while you do this) Geoff will bear witness to the number of dry joints which Potterton PCBs suffer from especially around the pins to the gas valve connector. CET is your best bet if you need a replacement PCB
