Nicola Sturgeon touching minor

On the 10 o'clock news just now. Nicola Sturgeon putting her arm around the shoulder of a school child in full view of the cameras .... surely inappropriate touching in this day and age ?

Well, Tiger Woods hugged a young boy yesterday!

That's not hugging.

If you extend that thought then the video recording and broadcasting of the event would probably be illegal too.

But it was on the BBC - they've been encouraging / covering up that sort thing for years !!!

We've a young boy in primary school. Very much a female world, with much physical contact as you'd expect, and I don't know a single person who'd even consider it remarkable. How a male teacher would fare in that situation, I can't imagine, and I find myself wondering why this should be so.

I don't remember any physical contact with teachers in primary school, apart from possibly the occasional plaster on a skinned knee.

I don't remember much at all from primary school, which makes me a bit sad. But for me it was only a few very young years. I don't think they have separate junior schools like we did. Our primary school goes right up to age 11.

I think they're trying to create a sort of 'nurturing' environment nowadays. I think that's good - I'm not advocating the sort of stand-offishness that I grew up with.

Odd, isn't it. Even the most macho blokes cuddle when they meet. On say a TV chat show. But don't give a distressed kid a cuddle ever. It is very sad.

I remember stinging nettles, cat shit in the sandpit, oil heaters in the ou tside toilets in winter, rather dodgy bakelite electric adapters powering t he christmas tree, and being sent to the shops on summer afternoons to buy lollies for the whole school. This was age 3.5 - 7.

They do now. They didn't in the 19-mumbleties. At least not on Wogan or Harty.

Exactly the point I was making. Ok for virtual strangers to cuddle, but a teacher can't comfort a kid in his charge. The exact reverse of some time ago.

A few months ago, when I was walking the lad home from school, another little boy was hurtling along the pavement on a scooter, slipped on some dogshit, and got a bit hurt. Nothing serious, but lots of crying. I rushed to see if he was okay, and we talked a bit to calm him down, but I felt strangely compelled to keep my hands behind my back. There wasn't even anyone else around. I later put it down to just being absurdly 'british', but I really think it was just fear of any accusations.

Not even the occasional slap for bad behaviour? Or, in the case of the girls, a spanking across the headmaster's knee, with their knickers down. Nobody did explain whey he suddenly left mid term.
