New 32mm plastic to old metal waste

I need to change an old basin. It has old metal waste pipe of some sort, covered in about 50 years of paint by the look of it. Until I cut it, I won't know exactly what size it is, and I'm guessing it is copper.



I'll be taking along a couple of couplings, in the hope they will fit:

I don't mind buying another one or two, then taking the surplus back to Screwfix. Is there anything else obvious to take along?

I found that a standard 32mm pushfit matched an ancient copper waste pipe (with no paint, and so obviously copper rather than the lead soil pipe).

IME the "universal" compression fittings have a reasonable amount of latitude since they need to cope with the difference between push fit and solvent weld pipes - which are different diameters even if notionally inch and a quarter...

Be sure to get rid of all surface coatings and polish with wire wool etc.

I have some abrasive mesh:

80 grit and 180 grit.

It really speeds up the job no end. There are layers and layers of paint on this old pipework, so I needed something fairly heavy duty before starting with the wire wool.
