It wasn't the kidneys that poisoned them, it was the liver which had a toxic level of Vitamin A.

Foetid is good, just a typographical difference. Fetid is American, though of course infiltrating here.

The Greek original was "??????". The Romans probably changed it to avoid the "??"(oe). It still appears in words like "Asafoetida".

I believe the Americans are right about ?fetus? too rather than our etymologically incorrect ?foetus?.
